EN The Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Montenegro share a history of difficult political transformation and genesis of statehood after the breakup of Yugoslavia. The socialist heritage has influenced their economic and social policies, and also shaped the path of the EU accession process of both countries. North Macedonia and Montenegro applied for EU member- ship in 2004 and 2008 respectively and now the two are candidates to join the European Union.1 The EU runs wide-ranging programs supporting the states’ social protection mechanisms and instruments in order to coordinate them and develop efficient and equitable social assistance measures. EU Membership will stimulate economic development and private investment which will in turn have a positive impact on the resolution of social security issues
