EN The aspects of the territorial organisation in the Piast monarchy reflect the state of remaining sources. The continuity factors of the organisation seem to originate from the assumed continuity of model of the territorial rule, relying heavily on the 12th- and 13th-century sources. The entitlements (mainly fiscal and military) of the castra governors were only indirectly documented in 12th century. The castellan rule of 13th century combines judicial, fiscal, military, and economic entitlements. The turning point of the territorial organisation seems to be connected with the apparent reception of patterns of monarchical rule from the Empire (marked mainly in entitlements of the monarchs) and emergence of the castellanus title on the turn of 12th and 13th centuries, both contemporary to the fall of the grand-ducal system. The Polish 13th century saw the decline of the castellan organisation due to the expansion of the immunity privileges and Teutonic law and shift of essential entitlements to the monarchs’ courts. The rise of districtus organisation in Silesia and capitaneus office in renovated Kingdom of Poland in early 14th century practically abolished the system, leaving only the honourable character and residual entitlements of the castellan offices.
